How to Get Runes in Broken Blade

Greedy Shop — buy 5 runes with Boss Coins

The Greedy Shop is inside the Colosseum at Nidavellir Island. Teleport to Nidavellir, enter the Colosseum, and look for the shop NPC. All 5 shop runes cost Boss Coins, which you earn by defeating summoned bosses. Souls Bomb starts at 1,000 Coins, scaling up to Shadow Clone at 1,800 Coins. Shadow Clone is the only must-buy — the other four are functional but get outclassed.

Sky Spire Dungeon — exclusive Crit Rune drop

The Sky Spire Dungeon is located in Jotunheim. Bosses inside have a low chance to drop runes, but the Crit Rune drops exclusively from the boss on Layers 80 to 90. It cannot be bought from the Greedy Shop, traded, or obtained anywhere else. This is strictly an endgame farm — do not chase it until your build can reliably clear Layer 80.

Farming Boss Coins

Boss Coins come from summoned bosses. To summon a boss, you need Boss Keys, which drop from bosses across all islands. Use Boss Keys at the Demon Summoner NPC in Nidavellir, select a difficulty, and defeat the summoned boss for coins. Higher difficulties reward more coins but require stronger gear. A reliable boss loop is the fastest route to 1,800 coins for Shadow Clone.

Rune Farming Priority by Stage

Beginner (Level 1–500): Ignore runes

Runes cost Boss Coins and require a reliable boss route to farm efficiently. Before Level 500, focus on codes, leveling, your first weapon, and unlocking islands. Running rune routes with a weak build wastes time that is better spent on progression basics.

Midgame (Level 500–5,000): Farm for Shadow Clone

Once you have a stable boss route and can farm Nivaron or Gelaros consistently, start saving Boss Coins for Shadow Clone (1,800 Coins). This is the single biggest DPS jump from any rune. If you have leftover coins, Thunder (1,400 Coins) is a solid second pick for general content.

Endgame (Level 5,000+): Chase Crit Rune

Crit Rune is the endgame target. It requires Sky Spire Layer 80+ access and consistent clears. The drop rate is low, so treat it as a long-term goal. Continue farming shop runes while you work toward Sky Spire readiness — Shadow Clone alone is enough for most content.

Excalibur route: runes as support

If you are pursuing Excalibur, runes can help speed up boss clears and Sky Spire runs, but they do not replace Dragon Slayer prep, Soul Forge, Sky Keys, or Holy Grails. Use Shadow Clone to accelerate your boss loop, but do not delay your main Excalibur farm for a Crit Rune chase.

Best Rune Picks by Use Case

Not every rune fits every situation. Use these picks to match the right rune to your current content and playstyle.

Best for boss farming

You spend most of your time on summoned bosses and want a rune that accelerates your loot loop.

Best pick: Shadow Clone

Backup pick: Thunder

Shadow Clone's clones inherit your stats and scale into endgame. Thunder is a cheap backup that still outperforms Hell Fire on single targets.

Best for endgame DPS

You have a stable build and want to push maximum damage output for Sky Spire or Nightmare bosses.

Best pick: Crit Rune

Backup pick: Shadow Clone

Crit Rune multiplies your existing crit stats. It is the only rune that provides a permanent stat boost rather than a triggered effect.

Best budget starter

You just unlocked Nidavellir and have a limited Boss Coin supply. You need a functional rune without the grind.

Best pick: Souls Bomb

Backup pick: Hell Fire

Souls Bomb is the cheapest rune at 1,000 Coins. Hell Fire at 1,200 Coins offers better AoE value if you farm grouped mobs.

Best for AoE farming

You farm large packs of enemies on islands and want a rune that clears crowds faster.

Best pick: Hell Fire

Backup pick: Blizzard

Hell Fire hits multiple enemies with its AoE explosion. Blizzard provides sustained damage over time for drawn-out fights.

FAQ

What is the best rune in Broken Blade?

Shadow Clone Rune (1,800 Boss Coins) is the best rune for most players. It summons 2 clones that each deal 3x your M1 damage, making it the highest DPS rune in the shop. For endgame players, the Crit Rune provides a multiplicative stat boost that can outscale Shadow Clone in long fights.

How do I get runes in Broken Blade?

There are two ways. The Greedy Shop in Nidavellir sells 5 runes for Boss Coins (1,000–1,800 each). The Crit Rune drops exclusively from the Sky Spire boss on Layers 80–90. You need Boss Keys to summon bosses for coins. Read the How to Get Runes section above for full farming routes.

How much do runes cost in the Greedy Shop?

Souls Bomb costs 1,000 Boss Coins, Hell Fire costs 1,200, Thunder costs 1,400, Blizzard costs 1,600, and Shadow Clone costs 1,800. All are purchased with Boss Coins earned from summoned bosses at the Demon Summoner NPC.

Is the Crit Rune better than Shadow Clone?

Crit Rune provides a permanent stat boost to Crit Chance and Crit Damage, which scales multiplicatively with your gear. For general boss farming, Shadow Clone is better because its clones deal 3x M1 damage each. For endgame DPS min-maxing, Crit Rune can pull ahead. Most players should buy Shadow Clone first and chase Crit Rune later.

Should beginners farm runes?

No. Beginners should focus on codes, leveling, weapons, and unlocking islands. Rune farming requires a reliable boss route and at least 1,000 Boss Coins. Start thinking about runes once you have a stable Nivaron or Gelaros farm running.

Can I get runes from trading?

The Crit Rune cannot be traded or bought from other players — it is bound to your account. Shop runes are not tradeable either because they are consumed on purchase. You must farm Boss Coins or Sky Spire yourself.

How do I farm Boss Coins fast?

Farm bosses for Boss Keys, then use the keys at the Demon Summoner in Nidavellir to summon harder bosses that drop more coins. A fast boss loop with a stable build is the most efficient route. Joining a group reduces clear time per run.
