Recommended Route

Once you have your weapon forged and your race settled, the next power jump comes from runes. Runes are equippable buffs that add elemental damage, defensive stats, or utility effects to your character. They come from a dedicated farming zone called the Cave of Runes, and choosing the right rune for your build makes a real difference in mid-to-late game dungeon runs.

What Are Runes in Iron Soul Dungeon?

  • Runes are equippable passive items that give your character extra stats or special effects. Think of them as a secondary gear layer - your weapon determines how you fight, your rune determines what extra power you bring into each run.
  • Each rune is tied to an element and provides a specific buff. Fire runes boost attack and burn damage. Ice runes add chill effects and defence. Lightning runes increase speed and chain damage. Earth runes improve survivability. Life runes give sustain and healing. Shadow runes boost critical hits and burst damage.
  • You can equip one rune at a time. Switching runes is free and can be done between dungeon runs, so you can adapt your build for different dungeons or boss fights.
  • Rune effects scale with your weapon level. A higher-level weapon amplifies the rune's base stats, so upgrading at the forge also makes your rune more effective.

How to Get Runes - the Cave of Runes

  • Runes are obtained exclusively from the Cave of Runes, a special instanced zone you can enter from the cave system hub. The other cave, Cave of Crystals, drops gems for weapon levelling instead.
  • You need Cave Tickets to enter the Cave of Runes. Tickets are earned from active codes, daily quests, and community milestones. Each ticket grants one run in the cave.
  • Inside the Cave of Runes, you fight through waves of enemies and a final mini-boss. The deeper you go in a single run, the better the rune reward at the end. Clearing all waves guarantees a rare or higher-tier rune drop.
  • Save your Cave Tickets for longer sessions. A single focused session with multiple Cave of Runes runs is more efficient than one-off entries spread across different days.
  • Higher-difficulty dungeon runs also have a small chance to drop common-tier runes from boss kills, but the Cave of Runes is by far the most reliable source.

All Rune Types and Effects

  • Fire Rune - boosts fire damage and adds a burn effect on hit. Enemies hit by burn take small damage-over-time ticks. Best paired with aggressive melee builds and heavy weapons that land fewer, harder hits.
  • Ice Rune - adds cold damage and a slow effect. Slowed enemies move and attack less frequently. Excellent for kiting-heavy playstyles and light weapon users who need more control.
  • Lightning Rune - increases attack speed and adds chain lightning damage that arcs to nearby enemies. Great for wave-clearing builds and fast-attacking weapons like swords and daggers.
  • Earth Rune - increases defence and gives a damage reduction buff. The most defensive option. Useful for beginner players learning boss mechanics or for tank-oriented heavy builds.
  • Life Rune - adds lifesteal effects, recovering a small percentage of damage dealt as HP. Essential for sustain in longer dungeon runs and for players who prefer face-tanking over dodging.
  • Shadow Rune - boosts critical hit chance and critical damage. The highest offensive ceiling of all runes, but relies on having decent base crit stats from your gear and attributes. Best for late-game players with optimised builds.

How to Equip Runes

  • Open your inventory menu and navigate to the Rune tab. You will see all runes you have collected sorted by tier and type.
  • Select a rune and choose Equip to slot it into your active rune slot. You can only have one rune active at a time, so choose based on the dungeon you are about to run.
  • Runes have tiers: Common, Rare, and Legendary. Higher-tier runes have stronger base effects. You can only obtain Rare and Legendary runes from deeper Cave of Runes clears.
  • You cannot upgrade runes directly at the forge, but levelling up your weapon increases the effectiveness of your equipped rune. A max-level weapon paired with a Legendary rune is the strongest combo available.
  • Your equipped rune is visible on your character model as a visual effect - fire runes give a faint glow, ice runes leave frost trails, lightning runes crackle between swings, and shadow runes darken your attack animations.

Best Rune Picks by Build

  • Best for Beginners: Earth Rune or Life Rune. The extra defence and sustain make early dungeon runs much more forgiving while you learn enemy patterns and dodge timing.
  • Best for Light Weapon / Fast Attack Builds: Lightning Rune. The attack speed bonus and chain lightning synergise perfectly with fast multi-hit combos.
  • Best for Heavy Weapon / Burst Builds: Fire Rune or Shadow Rune. Heavy weapons hit hard and slow - Fire adds a burn layer that keeps dealing damage between swings.
  • Best for Boss Fights: Shadow Rune (if you have crit stats from gear) or Ice Rune (if you need more control).
  • Best for Wave Clearing / Farming: Lightning Rune. The chain lightning effect clears groups of weaker enemies faster than any other rune.
  • Best for Tank Builds: Earth Rune. The flat damage reduction scales well with high-defence gear and heavy weapons.

Rune Farming Tips

  • Stack your Cave Tickets before farming. A session of 5-10 consecutive Cave of Runes runs has better loot consistency than spreading them out over days.
  • Redeem every active code before you start. Codes frequently give Cave Tickets as rewards.
  • Complete daily quests daily - they are the most reliable repeatable source of Cave Tickets outside of codes.
  • Join the official Discord server. The community sometimes announces bonus Cave Ticket events.
  • Do not obsess over getting a Legendary rune early. A Rare tier rune that matches your playstyle is better than spending all your tickets chasing the highest tier.
  • If you are struggling in the Cave of Runes, switch to an Earth or Life rune from a previous drop to improve survivability.
